it's alive
posting from the fin's computer as laptop it running a recovery program. I know my last post said that my poor old laptop's problems were probably terminal, well they seem to have got a bit less terminal :)
Having spent the weekend with the laptop in bits, the fans now work, the battery is still dead and I know what the problem is with the hard drive - and it's not a mechanical fault, it's a problem with some of the data sectors.
So I ended up running a quick surface scan and fix the disk and that's got it stable enough for me to run the main scan - which what it's been doing for the last three and a half hours - it's probably got ablout another two hours to go.
So it looks like the problem is at least temporarily fixed without the need for me to spend money - which is a good thing as my credit card company has pretty much said no to be buying one on it for the next six months or so.
