Story deletions at Fanfiction .net

There are things going on with fanfiction.net at the moment with people getting stories deleted because they are enforcing their 'summaries must be G rated' rule.

In most cases it looks like it's fics where there are swear words in the summary or title of the fic. There are a few comments on the tumblr thread below that suggest they are deleting anything that really NC17 but has been posted as an M.

People are not getting warnings before the stories are taken down. FF.net takes the story down and then messages the writer to say it's been taken down.

There are people talking about it here:

I have some of my fics up over at ff.net, but all of them are hear on LJ with a complete back up of everything from this journal on Dreamwidth. None of mine have been taken down, and I've just checked through my summaries and I can't see any reason that they would be.

A lot of people on the tumblr threads seem to be talking about heading over to AO3. So things might start to get busier over their. Although it might take a while as the waiting time for an invite at the moment (presumably because there are lots of people wanting them) is something like three months.

That's insane. However, it's pretty par for course for ff.net. I remember when they deleted all the Bandom stories / real person stories and said they "weren't real fiction."

The people that run that site have a set view of what should be considered fanfiction and damn if you don't agree with them.

Also, my smutty stories are still there. Currently. But I don't have any profanity in my summaries. We'll see what happens.

Funny you should post this, as it happened to me the other day. One of my fics was taken down because it had 'fucked' in the summary, but it was rated an 'M' anyway, so it shouldn't have come up in any of the searches unless you were specifically searching for 'M' fics.

Meh. FF.net has been crap for years now..

They've really gone downhill. There is a fan fiction "Purists" group going around reporting fanfiction recently. FF.net lists things you can't put up in their guidelines, but this group has been attacking things like "Lemons: under the M rating and how people portay characters.

I think it's really sad to see this happen to a site that started out so well.
