Waters of Mars - my random thoughts on it.
I think that was probably the least upbeat ending of any Doctor Who episode that I've seen. I suppose it was neccessary to have an episode like this to get across the point that there are somethings that even the Doctor cannot change, and to set the scene for the final two episodes at Christmas. But I think this is probably about as bleak as a Doctor Who episode can get.
I mean just about everybody died. Adelaide going into her daughter's/granddaughter's house at the end and shooting herself. Who knows what happened to Yuri and woman I can't remember the name of, running off into the night - did they get to survive? or because in the original timeline they died, they met their end off sceen.
There were a few things that I'd seen before WoM that said people had wondered if the aliens were too scary. I don't think that the possessed alien people were any scarier than the some of the other aliens that have been on the new series. What was scary was the whole predestination of events and you can't can't save yourself no matter what you do theme.
Crazy Doctor is Crazy:
I did actually think that they were going to leave the episode with crazy Timelord Victorious Doctor. He seemed like he was in the kind of frame of mind that would do the thing that's rumoured (but in no way confirmed) to happen in the Christmas specials.
Random thing that I liked:
The robot, or rather the fact that it wasn't like I was expecting it to be. The promo pic and what I'd heard had meant that I fully expected a very annoying talking robot of the Johnny 5 variety (Short Circuit for those who are interested).
Random thing I disliked:
The music was too loud for a lot of this and I know it was supposed to be there for tension, but it really was too instrusive at times.
It will be interesting to see where they go with the Christmas specials after this. I think despite the thing that is going to happen in them they will, or at least the last one of them will, have a happier ending than this one.
