Torchwood series 4 interviews
Aug. 8th, 2010 09:22 amBits of interviews with RTD and Julie Gardner here: http://tardisnewsroom.blogspot.com/2010/08/torchwood-gets-new-title-new-world.html
So Rex and Esther the CIA agents are actually going to be in the show, although no confirmation of the surnames. (or the rumours of a third character mentioned in some of the casting info that may or may not have been true that was leaked last month)
From the sounds of it they (Rex and Esther)are going to find out about aliens and then spend their time on the run from their government - kind of like what happned in CoE, just in the US.
I must say from the casting call info I thought they (rex and esther) sounded like Jack and Gwen. I suppose if they aren't going down the Jack/Gwen route they I guess feel they need a m/f couple for the audience to identify with.
Less happy about the whole 'it's a reboot to welcome a new audience' from Julie Gardner. But I suppose it was kind of inevitable - there's not much left of the original apart from Jack and Gwen.
I'm also not super excited about the episode writers, with the exception of Jane Espenson. I know that people are all excited over Doris Egan because she writes House episodes that could be considered rather House/Wilson shippy - however, that relationship is always played as a joke, and not forgetting how that show portrayed 13's bi-sexuality - as an indicator of how messed up she was (but only the dating women part.)
John Shiban I liked some of the stuff that he's done, but he was responsible for the last couple of series of x-files, you know the ones where the show had just been going too long and was too caught up in it's own mythology to be interesting any more (which is a shame as I liked the earlier series, and Shiban was responsible in part for the Lone Gunmen)
I would have liked to see people like Catherine Tregenna doing some episodes again - I always thought hers were some of the best. (I also miss Chibnall writing eps, I mean he gave us Cyberwoman, Countrycide and KKBB. and the series 1 and 2 finales.)
It could still be alright though, not exactly Torchwood, (and certainly not TW s4 - it think the fact that it has been called a reboot confirms that) more of a spin off of Torchwood, how Torchwood itself was a spin off from Doctor Who (or SJA is a spin off of DW).
So hopefully it will be a good show - A good new show, with a couple of familiar characters.
