Summary: When Jack is exposed to alien tech he needs Ianto's help.
A/N: Not beta’d, as the bunny bit just a few hours before the deadline. Written for [livejournal.com profile] redisourcolor challenge #24

Storm clouds roll in thick and heavy across the bay, the evening sky prematurely darkening to night. The wind rises as the pressure drops, the gusts whipping up spray from an already choppy sea.

Jack is oblivious to all this though as he runs across the Plas, and down to the jetties project out into the bay. Green and gold alien particles cling to his hair, clothes and skin, their tiny faceted surfaces glinting in the light from the assembly building.

Ignoring the few tourists and shoppers and the calls from behind him to wait, Jack doesn’t stop until he’s reach the end of the farthest pier.

Memories true and false bombard him, while the wind seems to scream with the voices of those he’s been unable to save. Dropping to his knees he shouts out, the cry inarticulate and lost.

Ianto reaches him a few moments later. Crouching down beside him, careful not to touch the glittering flecks, he says, “Jack. Jack, to listen to me.”

Jack stares at him, eyes wide and uncomprehending of what is going on.

“I can hear them.” He covers his ears with his hands. “It won’t stop. Make it stop!”

Lightening rends the sky above them, followed seconds later by the rumble of thunder as the first raindrops start to fall. Ianto says, “I will, I promise, but you've got to trust me.”

Jack nods. The single coherent action seeming to take the little remaining concentration that he's got.

Ianto glances down at the cold, swirling water below, and then says “We need to wash it off, Tosh says the salt in the water will disrupt the nano-circuitry in the particles.”

Wild eyed, Jack looks at the sea, hands moving up to cover his ears once more. “I can't. They'll pull me down. Down to...”

“They won't,” Ianto cuts in. “I'll be with you.”

Then, wrapping his arms around Jack, Ianto steps off the end of the pier.

They hit the water in a tangle, and disappear beneath the restless waves. Long seconds drag out, the few people that had been on the Plas moving closer, horrified fascination on their faces, as they try to understand what they've just seen.

Seconds later, they break the surface with a gasp.

Holding on tightly to Jack, with one hand, Ianto clings to the edge of the jetty with the other.

Eventually, all the shimmering particles that had clung to Jack have either washed away or have dimmed and died.

Exhausted, Jack rests his head against Ianto's shoulder, and whispers, “Thank you.”

“You'd do the same for me,” Ianto replies, his teeth chattering with the cold. “Now let's get somewhere warm.”

Soaking wet and shivering, they've just helped each other climb out of the water, as the rest of the team arrive.

With his arm around Ianto, Jack smiles at them, and says, “Time to go home.”

Lovely, the way Ianto grabs Jack and jumps into the water with him, risking everything and braving the cold sea to help Jack just shows the lengths Ianto will go to for the man he loves.

I like how this played out. With the plot thread, it'd be easy to slip into by-the-numbers, but this stayed on the edge, making it meant-to-be instead. :D

Beautifully atmospheric and wonderfully tense. I also love that Ianto gets to be the strong one.

Oh wow, I can just see Ianto doing this as well. Cold! Plus Jack's coat would be really heavy. Very sweet.

I loved how Ianto was there for JAck, he'd do anything for his captain as would Jack for his Ianto.
