8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

I write OC when and where needed, and I’ve never really been bothered by the whole mary-sue thing. I just write the characters that the storyline needs to work and people can take it or leave it.

I never had anybody tell me any of my OCs are mary-sues, but then I suppose my OCs aren’t falling for the main characters/loved by everybody/have super special sparkly powers – they are just there driving the plot along when needed.

Until now I’ve haven’t had a reoccurring OC, but Dr Ruth Armitage who appeared in Secret and Hope and will continue to appear in the virtual series that I’ve got planned. I hadn’t planned when I wrote Secrets and Hope that there would more in than ‘verse.

My notes for here were/are: Good at her job, but not a leader in the field. Is comfortable with who she is. Mid forties, shoulder length brown hair now going a bit grey, worn in ponytail. Never married. Her father was a GP. She had a son when fairly young, from a relationship at university when about 19/20. Studied biomedical sciences, got a 2:1. She’s worked mostly as a researcher/research assistant for a variety of private sector companies. Her son died when he about 18/19 (about 7 years before she appears in Secrets and Hope) – not decided how, tending towards either car crash or maybe while serving in army.

I don’t think she’s likely to fall into peoples mary-sue categories, but who knows.

Okay I've just found out about this site from the Highlander webpage on facebook.

www.blinkbox.com

Basically it has a mix of to buy and rent films and TV series that you pay for a lot like Itunes. Not sure if they are cheaper, it seems to be about £1.89 per episode. But it also as free contents as well.

It has all six series of Highlander the TV series free to watch (Which is why it got a mention on the Highlander facebook page) and some of the classic Doctor Who series as well. Also for free, Andromeda, Mutant X and Bloodties. There are some free films too.

The only downsides to the free stuff is: it's watch online only - there's no download option and there are advert breaks - which is how they provide it for free. But it's no worse than watching it on a TV channel with adverts, with about 4 ad breaks per show, the ad breaks are also fairly short, about a minute each.

Also on the subject of Highlander, there's plans to remake the original Highlander film. Not too sure what I think about that.
