For sure in S1 Jack was searching for the Doctor and for his answers. Now that he's at peace with what he is, he's begun to search for atonement. For that reason, he may very well think he deserves to be treated poorly as penance. I agree. It's heartbreaking if you think of it in those terms.
The Captain's Blog from S1 intrigued me and I wrote an entire series of fics based on it. Well, about all the stuff Jack writes about Ianto, anyway! I was writing one for S2 up until Adam and then my friend requested a torture fic! You might like when it's done. It's Jack's year with the Master. It's over 100 pages now. It's dark, violent, bloody and I explore these themes about the Doctor. Instead of using the Doctor to anchor Jack for a year, I'm using the team. It's obvious when he runs across the Plass in Last of the Time Lords that they are where his heart is now.
