Oh wow re your Nan, and how amazing that she does still remember. I have an elderly relative who is old enough, just 100, but I don't think she remembers anything. My last relative who would do died a couple of weeks ago, my uncle who served in WW11.
I do agree with you though, in my childhood WW11 didn't feel very far in the past and was like a shadow, also the cold war was very strong. I find it strange to contemplate how teenagers today must view the world having neither of those things. Can't believe it's 20 years today since the Berlin Wall fell.
