I've been hanging around the Primeval fandom for a few days, including reading the virtual series 3 that was produced, due in part to events that happened at the end of series 2.

Primeval virtual series 3 can be found here: http://community.livejournal.com/primeval_denial/562694.html

It got me was wondering if there was any interest in having a alternative series 3 for Torchwood. I've heard that there people working on a virtual series 4 for Torchwood, so there's not much point setting up another one of those.

I've not seen a Torchwood virtual season three about yet, although if people are writing on let me know as I don't want to end up duplicating somebody else's project.

What I'm thinking is full thirteen episode series of fics written by multiple writers.

There would be a question of where to start the VS, after Exit Wounds, after the The Stolen Earth or after the radio plays.

My own preference would be after The Stolen Earth as at that point got the time lock technology on the Hub, Mickey is back on this Earth, so could either join the team or put in the occasional appearance as a guest character.

However when it's set will be a group decision by all those writing.

The focus of the VS would be to produce case fic type stories rather than ones that focus on shipping (not to say that the relationship stuff can't be mentioned, it's just not going to be the main theme of the stories.)

I think there would have to be a word count type thing for the stories, as if we're going for the episode feel they really need to all be of a similar length, so both a minimum and a maximum word count would be needed. Although there could be a couple of double lengths stories in the VS, maybe one mid series and one for last two fic episodes of the VS.

The people writing would need to know to some extent what each other are writing, maybe not the specifics, but for example, if the person writing episode three has Mickey joining the team or the SUV getting blown up then all the writers after that point will need to know for the sake of continuity.

Also if there's going to be a story arc all those writing need to know what it is so they can decide if information towards the story arc appears in their episode. They would also need to agree as a group what that story arc is going to be.

With people having an idea about what each other are writing would also avoid their being two similar stories in the VS, ie two invisible alien storylines. People would also then be able to work on their stories at the same time, rather than the people writing the last episodes having to wait for everybody else to finish, and potentially find out that the storyline they wanted to use now doesn't work because of what happened in the previous episode.

I think the series would need to all be written before any posting could start, so that there could be be some form of schedule to it, say one episode a week.

This would be a massive project, with a lot of planning needed, and it would be months until it's actually ready for posting. At the moment I don't know if I can commit to actually writing a whole episode myself, but I would certainly be involved, an am willing to help co-write, keep track of continuity, be a sounding board for ideas, and be beta reader.

As a time scale, and bearing in mind the length of time it would take to get the VS written, edited and ready for posting, I think that having it ready for October 11th, and the 4 anniversary of the series first airing would be nice.

So what do people think? Is this worth persuing/posting out to comms to gauge further interest?

This sounds interesting! With my current commitments I couldn't do anything right now, but within a couple of months it's certainly doable, and from the sounds of it, this will take a little while to set up. I'd be willing to cowrite with someone as well, which might make it more workable for someone else who's crunched for time but wants to participate. I'll keep watching your LJ for updates to see how this is progressing. I hope you have lots of interest, because frankly, I was not impressed with series 3, especially its outcome.

I'm not a writer, but I'd certainly be interested in reading it if you manage to get it up and running. I think it's an exciting idea.
