Fan fic meme - days four, five and six.
Jul. 18th, 2011 02:35 pmSlight later with some of these as it's suppose to be one a day, but it's up to date now.
4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
No muses as such, although there are certainly some characters that I find easier to write than others. The closest there is, I suppose, is Ianto, as it was only really after the Cyberwoman and Countrycide episodes that I really started writing fic, because I found him interesting.
5 – If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
I can’t say as I have. I suppose it might be because of how I write, close 3rd person, so there’s not really so much of an opportunity for another character to take over the fic.
6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
I don’t mind writing either, but I tend to write male characters significantly more. I’m not sure why, as it’s not limited to fanfic, as even with my early attempts at writing original fiction it was always from the male characters POV. I suppose it sort of saved me from an embarrassing self-insert Mary-Sue phase though.
It’s not that I don’t like female characters, there are load that I find totally awesome and kick ass, but 99% of the time I can’t seem to get into their heads enough to write them. I don’t think it can all be put down to female characters are portrayed on screen/in books, that they aren’t given enough screen time/great scenes/good backstory – even if they have all these things I still can’t seem to write them.
So I’ve come to the conclusion that it is more of a flaw (okay not exactly a flaw, but I’m stuck for a word to describe it) in me, as to why I struggle to identify with them. I’ve been told often enough in real life that I don’t think how women do (whatever the hell that means), but perhaps they are on some odd level right.
