There have been a lot of places over the years that Captain Jack Harkness has called home.
Once it had been a house over looking the sea. A house that had been filled with light and laughter, a properly family home, or at least after all these years that’s how he remembers it.
Then that home had been ripped away. The place may have remained, but all that had made it home was gone.
In time home became a bunkroom with two dozen other cadets while he’d trained to become a Time Agent. Then that had been lost to him as well, taken along with memories that he knows he will never regain.
After that home didn’t matter. Home and commitment were just things that he knew he could lose; and he wasn’t doing that again. He was too clever to fall into that trap again, or at least that’s what he's told himself.
Despite this, he'd found another home. One that hadn't been a place fixed in space or time, but tied to the fates of two of the most amazing people he’d ever met. It had been amazing, fantastic, and in the end all too brief.
He’d drifted after that, afraid to call anywhere home, unable to put down roots because he knew he was just waiting for them to come back, even if he had to wait forever.
You can never go home again. And when, after all those years of waiting, he'd finally stood in the TARDIS, a different Doctor, with a different young woman at his side, Jack had found it couldn't have felt more true.
Since then he's had time to think. Too much time in all honesty, over the past year, a year that exists now only in the minds and memories of a few.
“I’m home,” Jack whispered into the darkness, and for the first time in over a century he truly believed it.
“Mmm, I know, now stop hogging the covers,” Ianto mumbled still half asleep, curling against Jack’s warmth.
In the years and centuries to come he knows that he’ll have many more homes, simply because he learnt that he can’t not have them, that he can’t live like that, not if he wants to actually live.
Right now though home is here in the arms the man he’s come to realise he loves, and there’s nowhere else he’d rather be.
