Watched the start of the second series of Ripper Street last night, meant to post then but was too tired.

Seems like it's going to be more of a continuing background storyline through the series rather than them all being stand alone episodes until the last couple like last series.

Not sure what I think about them having Joseph Merrick in it. I know they've had real historical characters in it before, like Frank Abeline, but as he was the main investigator of the Ripper murders that seemed natural. I get the feeling that what they are trying to show is that it doesn't matter who you look it's how you are to people that matters. So I'm assuming that we get a very charming, good looking man who's actually really unpleasant appearing. I'm assuming it's not Jedediah of K section, because he's just unpleasant all round.

The Drake/Bella I felt rather came out of nowhere. They really had been playing Drake/Rose last series. Although I have nothing to base it on, so this is a spoiler it's completely unfounded speculation, I really wonder how long Drake/Bella will last. I have the unpleasant suspicion that Bella won't make it all the way through the series, opening the situation back up for Drake/Rose again. I hope I'm wrong as don't really want them killing off a character for the sake of it and I'm not sure whether Drake would last that long afterwards.

I want to know where Mary Reid is. Based on Reid reactions and the fact that he'd keeping it secret it's unlikely that she has died. There would be no point in hiding that, people would understand that. The pretense that she'd still at home, that he's not even told Drake who appears to be the closest Reid has got to a friend means that it's something that he doesn't think that anybody could understand or is to the Victorian mindset something taboo. If she'd been kidnapped Reid would have the whole of H division out looking for her.

I think the most likely reason is that she'd left him. Probably not for another man, but that after the revelations at the end of the last series that she found she just couldn't live with him anymore.

Unlikely but perhaps more interesting maybe she left to live and work at the orphanage with Deborah Goren. She seemed to get on well with her, she liked helping people as seen with her work with the church charity work she'd been doing and she liked children.

I'm hoping that they don't go down the route of her having ended up in a sanitarium or mental health hospital after being unable to deal with how she lost her daughter.

Nothing really to say about the trailer for next week apart from I think I spotted Damien Molony's character. Thinks what I said up post about a charming but ultimately dangerous/unpleasant man. thinks about DM's last major role = will now be very suspicious of his character and what he's hiding.

Wonders how long before there are Being Human crossovers - Hal had been around as a vampire for 500 years, gives a lot of scope for crossovers.

So anybody else got any thoughts on this?

I agree with this seeming like a large story arc, much more so than last season. Definitely had a different flavor to it. Drake's marriage did come from nowhere except that I already knew it was going to happen. ;) Had a spoiler sneak up on me. I actually had to go back and watch the last episode of season one to see who she was. Surprising.

I think Reid and Emily (I assume you're meaning Emily) are simply split, and he obviously doesn't want any one to know about it. There was no sign of reconciliation last season, that relationship is too far gone though it is obvious they still care for each other. I doubt she'd be insane, if anything she was handling the death much better than Reid.

Hoping to see some character development beyond Reid's speeches, Drake's fists and Jackson coming to the rescue with his gun. They are what they are, but I want this season to stretch them a bit, rather like last season's Weight of One Man's Heart did for Drake. That tapped into something I'd like to see again...Drake completely lose it.
