After so long in Bradford with building projects going nowhere, the place getting rubbished in the press (seriously the only time they mention Bradford is in the context of urban poverty and immigration) things are happening.
The shopping centre is finally being built http://www.bradfordbroadwaydevelopment.co.uk/. The old Odeon cinema (a lovely old 1930's twin screen cinema with it own ballroom which has been shut for the past 14 years) is going to revamped as a music/concert venue as either http://www.bradfordone.com/ or http://bradford-live.co.uk/ taking over the building.
As well as a plan for a leisure centre, a middle eastern style bazaar in a disused market, a cycle path linking it to Leeds, and work finally about to start on a long mothballed housing project.
And a project that if it happens (and it looks like it is) would be something fairly unique. http://www.sunbridgewells.com/ Basically there are a load of Victorian tunnels under some of the buildings at the Sunbridge end of town (by the old Odeon and the new city park) and they are looking to open them up with cafes, bars and maybe a market type thing. There are some nice pictures on the site (click the three grey bars in the top right to view - I missed them first time round.)
I've lived in Bradford for a while now, 15 years come this September, and despite some negativity in the local press about whether things will actually happen, it really feels like change is happening. It feels like the city is some how coming alive again.
