Was it ever explained how Clem’s sense of smell worked? Or as my brother put  it when I spoke to him last night “what was the deal with the crazy guy’s magic nose?”

 

I’ve seen it suggested in a couple of places that what Clem was using wasn’t actually an enhanced sense of smell, but some form of psychic ability.

 

But I don’t understand how that would work in relation to Gwen being pregnant – since she didn’t know and at three weeks gestation the baby’s brain wouldn’t have started to develop yet. So whose mind was he picking up on?

 

But if Clem really was detecting things by smell then I don’t understand how he could smell the 456 before they entered Earth’s atmosphere.

 

Is it possible Clem was both smelling things and was psychic as well?

 

Also how did he gain this ability? Certainly what happened to him as kid was traumatic, but would it really have given him an enhanced sense of smell and/or psychic abilities?

 

And if it was that previous interaction with the 456 that caused it what does that mean for all the millions of children affected by the 456 this time around? Will they start developing enhanced senses/psychic abilities too? It would be interesting, not least from a continuity point of view, if series 4 (if we do get one) looks at that.
